Last week, I had the pleasure of attending the premiere of the documentary: “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop: The Bad Boy Story” at the Tribeca Film Festival on behalf of Lincoln Motor Company. As you may already know, Lincoln is a consistent and valid sponsor of the festival and it was a great honor to be invited by them to Tribeca. The documentary was based on the founding of Bad Boy Records and the massive homecoming reunion that took place last year in New York City, 23 years after the label started.

The documentary follows Sean ‘P Diddy, Puffy, Puff Daddy” Combs, through the exhausting task of rounding up the Bad Boy family for a three-week rehearsal for the reunion performance. That may sound like a small task, but a lot of the original artists have moved on in life and Diddy is a perfectionist that is intent on having everything go as perfectly as possible.A good example of some of the personal issues that could have affected Diddy’s roundup would b,e Faith Evans and Lil’ Kim’s relationship and the ongoing feud that has been relevant since before Chris “Biggie Smalls” Wallace passed away.

In the backdrop of the film, we learn how Bad Boy rose to the top and how Diddy started his own label after working for others in the music industry. They also lightly touch on the media struggles they’ve had to endure, such as the 1999 shooting that put Shyne in jail for 10 years. And if you thought that Shyne wouldn’t have participated in the reunion, since he was deported to Belize after he served his time, you’re sadly mistaken. Shyne performed right from Belize via satellite. A feat that I’m still in awe about. Diddy tried to get everyone in on the show at all costs.

The other part of Bad Boy history that they went into was the death of the Notorious B.I.G. (Biggie Smalls). Via confessionals, all the members of Bad Boy, including Diddy, explained the impact that the rappers death had on their future and the future of the company.

There were some members that Diddy was unable to convince to join the tour. Craig Mack, who is now a converted Christian, would not attend the reunion even though Diddy went as far as having other associates try to call to convince him. However, Diddy did an impressive gathering of all the original members of the group (plus Shyne’s satellite performance) and made a successful production.

Director Daniel Kaufman did a great job of piecing together the images of the Bad Boy Story. But I was most impressed by the slow-motion clips of the Bad Boy reunion that was clearly what cinematographer dreams are made of.

At the end of the documentary, Diddy came out on stage and put on a performance that included: Lil’ Kim, Faith Evans, Carl Thomas, Mase, Justin Combs, and Christian Combs. It was absolutely amazing and I sang every last song that was played. There’s nothing better than seeing a performance and belting the lyrics at the top of your lungs, because you know every last syllable. I usually go to concerts and mumble because I never know the words.
